Originally born in Germany, Hanno Wessel studied fashion at the Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne in Paris and went on to work in haute couture for a number of years before eventually launching on his own label in1994.

Founder and designer Anna grew up in Mora in the Dalarna province of central Sweden where there is a strong tradition of handicrafts. At a very young age Anna was taught to knit and to sew by her mother and grandmothers eventually studying at the Swedish School of Textiles in Boras and then at Beckmans College of design in Stockholm where her 1994 degree collection became the first Nygårdsanna collection.
