Soft, natural wool is one of those materials that rewards a little care with many years of wear. With a few considered routines you’ll keep your wool garments looking and feeling wonderful. Here’s how.
When wool doesn’t need washing, don’t wash it. Wool fibres naturally resist odour and refresh themselves with a shake or gentle airing. Over-washing can reduce their longevity.
But when it does need a wash: keep it cool. Choose a cold, gentle cycle or hand-wash in cool water using a mild specialist detergent. Gently reshape and dry flat. Avoid twisting, wringing or high heat.
If you spot the odd little bobble (those fine soft fibres that come loose) don’t worry: this is part of its natural life. A de-bobbler or fabric shaver used with care (pull the fabric gently taut and brush in a downward motion) will restore the surface without damaging the fibre.
Storage matters, too. Clean your wool pieces before putting them away. Then fold or roll them into airtight containers with lids for the off-season. This keeps moths and humidity at bay and ensures your garments stay fresh.
Finally: accept that pilling is not a fault. It is rather the visible sign of a natural fibre behaving as it should. The softness, the small changes in texture these are part of the character of wool.
Treat your pieces thoughtfully, and they will reward you with comfort and warmth and for many seasons to come.
