This summer has been all about staying close to home for the Woven Store team and as much as we love travelling to far away places and experiencing new cultures and customs, we’re not altogether sorry to be missing out on the inevitable airport kerfuffle and quarantine worries.  We’re pretty pleased to be giving our carbon footprint a rest for a while and discovering more of what our own little island has to offer.

Staying closer to home affords the opportunity to visit somewhere you wouldn’t usually go and cutting down on the time spent travelling means more time for finding space and reconnecting with ourselves and loved ones.  We’re all for taking the slow road, packing a delicious picnic and heading off on a summer adventure or two!  We’ve pulled together some of our favourite summer past-times ideal for returning us to our everyday life restored and replenished.

Having time on our hands at home over the summer means making the most of long sunny days and warmer evenings by enjoying more of our meals outdoors.   We love nothing more than experimenting with new recipes and preparing fresh seasonal dishes to share with friends in the garden. Tomatoes, peas, fennel, courgettes and soft fruits including the first of the figs are just some of our favourite summer ingredients and this year we’ve even been growing some of our own.

Nothing encourages a spot of quiet self-reflection quite like getting back to nature, it’s been proven to boost immunity and has a positive effect on the mind as well as the body so we love to head out for a long walk whenever we can.  Our favourite walking spot has to be either the South Downs National Park or the New Forest.  We’re keen to take it up a notch this month and give forest bathing a try, or Shinrin-Yoku as it’s known in Japan.  This therapy was originally developed back in the 80’s and put simply, it’s the practise of walking and totally immersing yourself in the sounds, smells and sensations of the forest in order to benefit from a reduction in stress and anxiety and encourage a sense of calm and wellbeing.  Sounds good doesn’t it?

Living so close to the water a Woven Store summer just wouldn’t be complete without what’s now popularly known as wild swimming.  You really can’t beat slipping into an icy cool river or the sea for a refreshing dip to ease away the stresses of daily life and leave you feeling invigorated!  Apparently it’s all thanks to a natural endorphin high that us wild-dippers can’t get enough of!  There are so many safe and beautiful places to wild swim it’s hard to choose just one but if you’re fortunate enough to find yourself in Cornwall the clear azure waters of Kynance Cove are beyond compare.  If you do go, we thoroughly recommend leaving time to unravel on a wild coastal path walk while you’re there.

When the sun finally slips away a night under the stars is second to none in terms of totally switching off and connecting to the countryside around you.  However, if you prefer a few more creature comforts there are a multitude of inspiring alternatives out there that still enable you to get off the beaten track yet afford a little more luxury – cosy stays in gypsy caravans, shepherd huts, treehouses, cabins, safari tents, yurts & tipis are available all over the UK.  Leave the charger at home and pack your stargazing binoculars instead.

Last, but by no means least, our number one go to place of choice when we have time would have to be the Cotswolds.  Loved primarily for its honey coloured stone towns and villages the Cotswolds are a range of quintessentially English rolling hills and the largest area of outstanding natural beauty in England & Wales.  Our must visits include Daylesford, one of the most sustainable organic farms in England, Stow on the Wold, Chipping Campden, Bourton-on-the-Water and Hidcote, a beautiful arts and crafts garden nestled in the hills.

Closer to our home in Brighton we love a visit along the coast to Shoreham beach, a National Trust site, with its beautiful wild fauna and quiet beaches. A perfect place for contemplation.

Wishing you a wonderful summer!

We will be heading out to the Sussex countryside on 19th & 20th September to be part of The Country Brocante Fair ‘In the Meadows’ at Loxwood Meadow, near Billingshurst. Woven will be joining lots of other sellers & makers with our new Autumn edit of clothing and accessories. There will be food, produce, music and talks. A great day out. We are super excited as we will be camping for the weekend!!
